Plays of the islands of the Indian Ocean
The Jeux of the islands of the Indian Ocean are sporting plays organized in turn by the various islands of the south-west of the Indian Ocean according to an irregular calendar.
Origins
The idea to organize sporting plays in the Indian Ocean is allocated to the Olympic and sporting Regional committee (CROSS-COUNTRY RACE) of the Réunion, which registered their installation in his convention of objectives in 1974. It is adopted by the International Olympic committee (CIO) in 1976.Initially baptized Plays of the Indian Ocean, the sporting tests quickly change name to become the Plays of the islands of the Indian Ocean ( JIOI ) before the first edition, which takes place finally in 1979 in the absence of the Sri Lanka, initially implied in the project.
Various editions
The first editions were organized by the islands having the most important means in turn:- the first edition with the Meeting in 1979.
- the 2nd edition with Maurice in 1985.
- the third edition with Madagascar in 1990.
- the fourth edition with the Seychelles in 1993.
- the fifth edition with the Meeting in 1998.
- the sixth edition with Maurice in 2003.
- the seventh edition with Madagascar in 2007.
Difficulties
Since always, the organization of the Plays of the islands of the Indian Ocean ridges on three major difficulties.Initially, before each edition, the list of the tests to the program is the controversy object important, each organizing entity tending to propose tests in which its sportsmen shine in the place of tests in which their results are poor. the Meeting makes for example an intense lobbying in favor of the Handball, sport where its supremacy is undeniable.
More generally, there exists an important shift between the ambitious vision of the Plays which the rich person Réunionnais and that have more modest of which proof the Malgaches make, for example. This shift primarily due to the different means which the various delegations and organizing entities enjoy, the ones equipped well, the others is deprived.
The third difficulty comes from what the definition of what is a Réunionnais is badly established and thus disputed. The French delegation pushes in favor of a broader definition which would not prevent the participation of metropolitan athletes recently made in the island. The other delegations estimate that the attachment with the Meeting of certain candidates is already contestable.
In 2003, an additional bone of contention was related to the first participation of Mayotte, that the French obtained with torn off, without obtaining in addition that the sportsmen of the island can train a delegation with whole share distinct from the delegation réunionnaise, from where the strange name of France of the Indian Ocean given to the French team. The participation of Mayotte for the first time in the JIOI in 2003 is a compromise between the French State and the participating countries which accept that the delegations réunionnaises and mahoraises are gathered under the label " France ocean indien". If the sporting movement réunionnais is for the integration of Mayotte, it estimates that should not be done with the detriment of the Meeting since the concluded agreement (and to which the CROSS-COUNTRY RACE of the Meeting had not been invited) was to include the sportsmen mahorais in the réunionnaises teams. Finally a new compromise is found; Mahorais will pouront to introduce athletes only in the individual sports under the same shirt France Indian Ocean, and on which Réunionnais will be able to add Réunion. With the classification " officiel" only name France Indian Ocean is used.
For the sets of 2007 which must proceed in Madagascar, the Head of the State of the Union of the Comoros, the colonel Azali, accepted in the month of January 2006 that Mayotte takes part as such in the 7 be plays of the islands of the Indian Ocean. The other countries subscribed to the Comorian will.
