The English word playmate means person with whom one plays, and is thus used mainly to speak about a child. The word today is very much used to speak about the models posing for the magazine Playboy (and not to indicate the models which pose in the special editions of the company). Playmate of the month (playmate off the month) monopolizes in each month the central pages (centerfold) of the magazine, where naked photographs of the playmate are, a personal card presenting its measurements, its leisures, etc as well as a short article presenting it. The playmate became with the passing of years a true institution in North America.

At each year, a playmate is elected Playmate of the year ('in playmate off the year) in June. In the original magazine (American version), Playmate off the Year one year is one of the twelve playmates of the previous year (January at December). First Playmate off the Year was Ellen Stratton in 1960. A playmate gains 25.000$ American for his appearance in the magazine, whereas Playmate of the year gains 100.000$ as well as a car (often peinturée pink, but not at each year).

Since the first Publication of Playboy until September 2006, 635 Femme S posed as a playmate in this Magazine, the majority posing at the age of a score of years. They have for the majority the size of wasp. Hugh Hefner indicates only the playmate year, but takes account of the vote of the readers which is held today by Internet.

In the first number of Playboy, Marilyn Monroe is elected “ in sweetheart off the month ” and not “ in playmate off the month ”. Thus, the first playmate of the month is Margie Harrison, miss January 1954 (the second number of Playboy). The first playmate to show its Pubis is Melodye Prentiss, miss July 1968.

In general, a woman seems only once “ in playmate off the month ” in Playboy. But in the first years of the magazine, certain women were elected several times playmate of the month. It is the case of Margaret Scott (3 times: February and April 1954, April 1955), of Janet Pilgrim (3 times: July and December 1955, October 1956), of Margie Harrison (2 times: January and June 1954) and of Marguerite Empey (2 times: May 1955 and February 1956)

It also happened that several women were playmates same month. They are in the majority the twin cases of :

Karin September 1989 and Mirjam van Breeschooten
Carol January 2000 and Darlene Bernaola
Daisy December 2003 and Sarah TVS.

It also in December ago 1998 tripled (Erica, Nicole and Jaclyn Dahm)

In October 1958, Stalemate Sheehan and Mara Corday are both elected playmate of the month but do not have any family ties.

Single example of playmates of mother as a girl: Carol Eden (miss December 1960) is the mother of Simone Eden, miss February 1989.
