Players of failures
the Players of failures ( Shatranj Ke Khiladi ) is an Indian film of 1977 of the Bengali realizer Satyajit Ray, inspired by the news éponyme of Munshi Premchand, with Sanjeev KUMAR, Saeed Jaffrey, David Abraham and Tom Alter. Richard Attenborough there interprête the role of the general James Outram, and Amjad Khan that of king d' Avadh, Wajid Ali Shah.
The intrigue proceeds in 1856 and illustrates the life and the habits of the XIXe century in India the day before the Indian rebellion of 1857, in particular the colonial expansion policy led by the English Compagnie of the Eastern Indies and them divisions of the deceived Indian monarchs.
Synopsis
The film shows in parallel the historical drama of the Indian kingdom of Awadh (whose capital is Lucknow) and of its Moslem king Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, captured by the English and the history of two noble obsessed by the play of failure. Nawab, artist and poet, dispossessed monarch, cannot any more but deplore a poetic mode, once the English made it sign a treaty of protection. The parallel with this drama is the tale personal (and sometimes full with humor) of two noble rich person of this kingdom, inseparable friends, passionately inhabited by the play of chaturanga (or failures), neglecting their wives. The role of captain Weston, so English in its manners, but fallen in love with poetry Ourdou is also remarkable.
In the last scene, after having drawn on on Mirza, Mir “I deplore outside will not have more partner to play failures”. Mirza retorts to him “but you have a front you! ” (meaning to him thus that he forgives it) and he concludes “after fallen the night, we will turn over to the house. We two need darkness for kasher our faces. ”

Similarities can be found between this film and:-

- Shakespeare: as in the work of Shakespeare, the intrigue advances on several levels, and concentrates on personal dramas in the middle of historical dramas.
- the statement of Jean Giraudoux in Electra about perseverance, principal obstacle with happiness “a happy family, it is a local rendering. One happy time, it is the unanimous capitulation. ”. It is the bitter lesson of film: when the defeat is close, whether imports individual or collective wisdom, all is fate.
- There is an antiparallel with the film Hindi Lagaan carried out 24 years later. Shatranj Ke Khiladi depicts the English modifying the Indian play of the failures, then the political rules of administration of India. In Lagaan , the overpowered Indian villagers of taxes agree to play very british Cricket to defy the Raj .
