Playboy , founded in 1953 by Hugh Hefner, is a male magazine American known for its Playmate S and its Photographie S erotic. The French version appeared in 1973. The magazine is managed by Playboy Enterprises.
After several ideas of titles (Stag Party, The Gentlemen' S Club), Hugh Hefner and its associate Eldon Sellers stop on the title of Playboy.
The first number leaves in December 1953. The first number did not on a date if the sales were not good. In cover, Marilyn Monroe. It is the first sweetheart month. It is an immediate success. In a few weeks, the title is sold with more than 50.000 specimens to 50 hundreds the part. The second number was published in January 1954.
The famous rabbit is drawn by Art Paul for the second number of Playboy. For a long time, the rabbit hid on the cover and the readers were to find it.
In the Seventies, the magazine sells almost 9.5 million specimens throughout the world. The best sale is for the November issue of 1972: 7.161.561 specimens. WFP Rawlings made the cover. Since, the sales are declining. Competition is increasingly present: Penthouse, Maxim, FHM, Stuff…
In January 2004, Playboy celebrates its 50eme birthday. He is always the leader in the market of male magazine selling 3 million specimens per month with the the United States.
The French version, impetus in 1973, is currently published by the Société 1633, which also publishes the magazines Newlook and Him . In XXIe century, it is published in several countries and in several languages.
According to The Times of April 3rd 2006, Playboy has as a project to launch out in its first gay version to the the United Kingdom, have regard to the relatively important homosexual market.
The first Playmate in November 1953 (then called Sweetheart off the Month ) was Marilyn Monroe. Janet Pilgrim was playmate three times, in July 1955, in December 1955 and in October 1956. Pamela Anderson is the playmate which generally appeared on the cover of the Playboy (12 times).
One of the images of reference in Image processing is resulting from the specimen of November 1972. It is about the central page, the photograph of the playmate of the month, Lena Sjööblom (more usually called Lenna).
