Play triple
Original direction: baseball
" Double play" (" double jeu" , abbreviation DP) and " Play" triple; (" triple jeu" , abbreviation TP) are at the beginning of the expressions which belong to the vocabulary of the play of Baseball. A " double jeu" is the fact of making two withdrawals during the same play. A " triple jeu" (three withdrawals during the same play) is much rarer, and occurs for example when the runners try to steal each one a goal and that the striker strikes an arrow with a player of before-field. The expression " quadruple play" no direction with baseball has.

Derived direction: wink of the men of marketing in telecommunications
In the industry of the Telecommunications, the expression " Play" triple; is a neologism which indicates an commercial offer in which an operator proposes with his customers a whole of three services within the framework of a single contract:
- the access to Internet;
- the Fixed telephony (nowadays generally in the form of Voice on IP);
- and the Television (often of the Television by ADSL or the cable) with sometimes of the services of VOD.
It corresponds to a well-known technique of the marketing directors, who close with the " dependant Sale " , used here by the suppliers of access Internet, but which is also used in many of other sectors subjected to a strong competition, with a plethora of actors trying to sell exactly the same basic commodities in the process of vulgarizing. One thinks for example of the banking services (account running, credit card, insurance…), with the sector of the insurance, of the car or data processing.
The company which uses this technique seeks to extend the situation of monopoly which it can have on a certain product with other products. By doing this, it returns more " fidèle" (" captive") its customers (cost/complexity of the passage to competition higher), it increase the average receipt by customer and it reduces the competing pressure since the products are not completely any more comparable with those of the competitors.

The expression " triple play" used in the context of telecommunications with the the United States about the middle of the Années 1990 appeared. The opening to the competition of certain market segments (Promulgation of the " Act" telecommunications; in 1996) pushes various types of actors to define a strategy making it possible to conquer the traditional markets of rival companies and/or conversely of better fidéliser their customers.
The cable television operators, companies historically specialized in the distribution of audio-visual contents, launch very first the " commercially; modem câble" giving access to the Internet " rapide" and without time limit. The flows maximum hardly reach at the beginning more than 1 to 1,5 Mbit/s and the tariffs are relatively high, but the passion of the public is with go. There exists a strong demand for an alternative offer with the use of the dialup accesses by modem 56Kbit/s or the ISDN, only modes suggested then by the telcos room RBOC. Some cable television operators also start about the same time to propose the telephone service contract, with the constraint at the beginning to have to reduce the maximum capacity for traffic Internet. The companies of cable must level their infrastructure of access in order to be able to create a backward channel for flows of telephony, which has as an incidence to limit the growth rate of the number of subscribers to this service.
The expressions " dual play" and " triple play" appear in the speech marketing of the operators by analogy with the Baseball, national sport with the the United States.
In reaction, the telcos room (RBOC), examine the possibility of offering they also services of access to the fast Internet on the pair of copper by using technology ADSL. The still high cost then of the products and the implementation in the networks make that this technology remains confined at the market of the companies. It is necessary to wait several years before seeing the telcos proposing offers ADSL Internet with gravitational tariffs on the market general public. As for the diffusion of audio-visual contents on ADSL, the first commercial offers start to appear starting from 2003 - 2004 in Asia and Europe, in particular with the development of competition by the deblocking and the technological improvements like ADSL2+. On the French market, the supplier of access to Internet Free is the first operator with launching this type of offer with television at the end 2003 on dégroupée pair of copper.
Today, all kinds of actors propose the triptych " telephone + TV + Internet" : cable television operators, landline operators historical and alternate, suppliers of access to Internet, on access cables, copper ADSL, fiberoptic FTTH and radio (in particular WiBro and WiMax). Thus, these operators are from now on in competition the ones with the others with similar offers.
Implementation in the networks
In order to be able to deliver these three services in an economic way, the operators in telecommunications integrate various flows on a single network which can use with the access (i.e. on the segment which connects the customer to the network) various technologies high banc, in particular cable, DSL, Fiberoptic until the subscriber (FTTH). Various articles in this encyclopedia develop these subjects, to avoid repetitions consulting for example:

The implementation of a " offer; Play" triple; is controlled now perfectly. It required to solve certain technical difficulties such as for example the use of the good platform of invoicing to address to a population varied subscribers or to have the suitable density of subscribers to justify the introduction of the service financially. In addition, Voices, videos and Internet high banc are flows having different characteristics and different requirements with respect to the network which ensures the delivery of the service. The services voice are sensitive to the time and the variation of this one (gigue), whereas the loss of package or the regrouping of the packages has a greater effect on the video and the services of data. The division of a resource network such as the cable or the ADSL imposes constraints screw-àvis of the used equipment network which must offer mechanisms of Quality of service.
Quadruple play, Quadri-play & Multi Play
By extension, the operators use sometimes the neologism " Quadruple Play" (or " Quadri-Play" ) which indicates an commercial offer in which the operator adds to the three services above, a fourth service: generally mobile telephony. Connections wireless telegraphy allow to telephone in situation of mobility, even to deliver contents Vidéo or to reach Internet. All kinds of technologies can be used, in particular GSM, CDMA, UMTS, Wimax… the commercial objective is always the same one: to be distinguished on the market, to increase the " fidélité" of the customer while allowing him to have a single supplier for the whole of the services.
To indicate in a generic way the regrouping of several services in a single contract, certain operators speak sometimes about " Multi Play" .
These expressions do not have any direction with the Baseball. By making a lexical Loan, the operators in particular not english-speaking have needle and thread ignored or forgotten the original direction of the word " Play" triple; and created the new ones which does not have a direction in the field of origin.
Box
In France, the suppliers of access Internet very often market their services under name " Box " , literally " boîtier" , which indicates neither more nor less than the equipment of termination of network located at the subscriber making it possible this one to reach the services. The French FAI Free, with its Freebox, is at the origin of this lexical Anglicisme. Because of its business success, various other marks estimated to have to follow it: the Alice Box, the AOLbox, the Bbox, C-BOX, Clubinternet.box, the Livebox, the Neuf Box, the SFRBox, Télé2Box and the DartyBox.
Word dominating of the moment (" Buzzword")
" Dual play" , " triple play" , " quadruple play" , " multi-play" , " box" … and others similar Anglicisms and/or neologisms try to give an account of the innovation of a product or a technical solution. The speech marketing of the operators in telecommunications abounds in it. The Anglo-Saxons indicate them under the generic term of " buzzword" , literally a " word which sounds bien". It is about a " concept" (positive version) or of a " word creux" (less charitable version) with the mode intended to cause, when he is pronounced, a reaction of interest in the audience. Like any phenomenon of mode, a " buzzword" can become very quickly exceeded, even old-fashioned, as soon as it is identified like tel.
