Plate of Gempen
The plate of Gempen is a high plateau of Suisse, located in the Canton of Soleure.
Description
This plate of the Massif of the Jura is drawn up between 600 and 700 meters of altitude and is in the south-east of the town of Basle. In its width, its wooded sides mark the border with the valley which is in the canton of Basle-Countryside. Its top more raised, the Scharten is drawn up with 753 meters height. The top of the plate offers a view from above on the unit of the valley. For this reason, Gempen was colonized early and used by the local populations as alarms thanks to fires which were set ablaze in the event of danger, thus informing the inhabitants of the valley, in particular those of the communes of Gempen and at Hochwald.
No Ruisseau runs on the top of the plate which is made up only of meadows and strongly wooded dry pastures. Although it rains slightly more than in the sectors around Basle, the Géologie of the plate is responsible for water poverty. Indeed, the basement of the plate is composed mainly of Calcaire and the Argile whose layers are not folded, but horizontal. As limestone east dissolves forming a ic mass Karst, the rainwater can infiltrate easily in basement. This lack of water surface is a real problem for the life on the plate and must be filled using Puit S or of drillings.
Protection
The plate of Gempen as well as the communes of Büren, Dornach, Gempen, Hochwald, Nuglar-St.Pantaleon and Seewen are indexed in the federal inventory of the Landscapes, sites and monuments of national importance
