Plassendale-Nieuport channel
The channel Plassendale- Nieuport is a channel which connects the Canal Ghent-Ostend to the Yser on the level of Nieuport. It is long approximately 21 kilometers for a width of approximately 20 meters. The banks are entirely protected by a cement wall.
The channel dates from half of the 17th century. The goal was to connect Ghent to the sea because the access to the mouth of the the Scheldt was blocked by the Netherlands at the time of the Guerre Eighty Year old. Indeed, the Flanders zélandaise had been conquered by the Dutchmen. The Ghent-Ostend channel was thus prolonged by adding a lock to the level of Plassendale. The channel borrows part of the historical layout of the Ieperlee.
