Plasence

Plasence (more usually Plasencia ) is a common Spanish of the province of Cáceres. It had 36.596 inhabitants in 2005.

Its blazon has a castle flanked by a chestnut and a pine; it has a crown above and is surrounded by the currency the city: C Placeat Deo And Hominibus (For the divine and human pleasure). The flag has two horizontal bands, violet above, green in lower part.

History

Plasence was founded by Alphonse VIII of Castille at the edge of the Rivière Jerte in 1186 like a city to colonize and keep the south-western border of its kingdom. It was taken by the Moors of Almanzor in 1196, but was reconquered one year later. More the share of the defensive walls of the city always remain except the Alcázar , demolished in 1941.

In 1189, Plasence was declared seat of a diocese by the pope Clément III, and one started to build a Romance cathedral, but after one added Gothic, and later plateresques elements by destroying parts of the old Romance cathedral.

The city knew many revolts at the 15th century. In Plasence took place the marriage of Jeanne de Castille known as Beltraneja (1462-1530), and of Alphonse V of Portugal which aspired to the throne Castille, by which Plasence had to pay a fine with the crown after Jeanne had been demolished with the Bataille of Toro (1476).

Markets and Festivals

The great place (Plaza Mayor) located at the center of the old city is each Tuesday the heart of a traditional market where one can find various agricultural produce and artisanal, first Tuesday of August, this market accommodates also folk festivals and other events, it is Major Tuesday (Martes Mayor)
