Plappeville

Plappeville is a common French located in the department of the the Moselle.

Geography

The commune is located at approximately five kilometers in the North-West of the town of Metz. It is established on the slopes of the Saint-Quentin mount between 250 and 300 m of altitude. It is surrounded by the communes of Trolley-the-Metz, Metz, Round of applause-Saint-Martin, Scy-Chazelles and Lessy.

History

  • Antiquity: According to the work undertaken by the historian Louis Viansson, the immediate surroundings of the town of Divodorum (rebatized later Metz) are already inhabited whereas begins the Roman occupation. A certain number of villas were set up on the slopes of the Saint-Quentin mount, not far from the road connecting Rheims to Trier. The district of Tignomont, currently located on the heights of the village undoubtedly draws its name from the loggers who exploited the neighbouring forests then.
  • 621 : Saint Pappole, 28e bishop of Metz, makes build his residence of summer to the current site of the village. He baptizes his residence Pappoli Villa from where the village will draw its name. Thereafter, it will bequeath the villa to the abbey of Saint-Symphorien whom it itself had founded.

  • 835 : Drogon, 40e bishop of Metz, pays of Saint-Quentin in Vermandois of the relics of Saint-Quentin. It makes build an oratory at the top of the mountain where the relics are deposited. This oratory was replaced thereafter by a sanctuary which was used as parish several centuries lasting to the inhabitants of Plappeville, Scy-Chazelles, Lessy and Longeville.

  • 1870 : The marshal Bazaine establishes his general headquarter in the village. He organizes there the defense of Metz. November 22nd, the ammunition dump of the Extremely of Plappeville, then held by the Germans, explodes killing out of many prisoners of war French. Plappeville, just like the Alsace and the the Moselle, is annexed by Germany.

  • 1918 : November 11th, Plappevillois find French nationality.

  • 1940 : November 11th, the German army expels the near total of the population of the village.
