Plantu
Plantu , of its true name Copious Jean , born the March 23rd 1951 with Paris, is a satirical draftsman French.
Studies
Jean Plantureux obtains his Baccalauréat with the Lycée Henri-Iv in 1969. After having engaged of the studies of medicine, it gives up and leaves to Brussels in 1971 to follow the courses of drawing of the Saint-Luc school founded by Hergé.
Journalism
Plantu returns to Paris and makes the turn of the daily newspapers by proposing its drawings. It is engaged with the newspaper Le Monde and Bernard Lauzanne, editor association of the daily newspaper, publishes its first drawing on October 1st 1972, on the topic of the Guerre of Vietnam. In 1974, Claude Julien, then director of the diplomatic World , also requests it for drawings on subjects of the Third world.Plantu starts in 1980 a collaboration with the newspaper Phosphore , which will stop in 1986. André Laurens and Claude Lamotte, respectively director and editor association of the Monde , asks him in 1982 a drawing in One each Saturday. Plantu also takes part in the emission of Michel Polac on TF1, Right of reply .
In 1985, the director of the publication of the World , Andre Fontaine, imposes the everyday life of the drawings of Plantu in for, according to him, “ to return its place to the French tradition of the political drawings ”.
International recognition
Plantu obtains in 1988 the Mumm price for its drawing Gordji at the judges , and the price of black humor in 1989. He collaborates since 1991 in the weekly magazine the Express train which devotes to him each week the integrality of its third page.Plantu makes the meeting of Yasser Arafat during an exposure of its drawings to Tunis, and the fact of reacting to its drawings. This last draws to him even star of David of the Israeli flag on a drawing of Plantu, colors it and signs it. Plantu receives shortly after the price of the rare document with the festival of the scoop of Angers.
In 1992, Plantu goes to Jerusalem and makes the meeting of the Israeli Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres. This last sign one of its drawings signed before by number 1 of PLO. For the first time, the signatures of the two parts in conflict is affixed on the same document, one year before the ratification of the Accords of Oslo. With Amman, Plantu makes react the President of the French Republic François Mitterrand and king Hussein of Jordan at the time of a press conference on one of its drawings on the the Middle East.
Recognition in France
In 1995, the new model of the Monde prevents from now on from having the choice of the subject of its drawings. It is subjected to the choice of the director of the drafting, Edwy Plenel, according to the One.It makes expose to the Court of appeal Paris its originals and sculptures on justice in 1996, and receives the same year the Spanish trophy Gat Perish (international prize of the caricature). A setting with the biddings of its works is organized, little time after, with the Drouot Hotel with Paris.
In 1998, La Poste emits a stamp illustrated by Plantu in homage to the ONG Doctors without borders, drawn to 8 million specimens and sold 3 frank. UNESCO publishes the same year several tens of portfolios of drawings of Plantu in foreign languages, in the honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal declaration of the Human rights . In 2005, La Poste again calls upon the draftsman for the emission except program on the 60e birthday of the release of the concentration camps, emitted the April 24th 2005, day of the memory of the deportees in France.
A polemic bursts in September 2000 about one of its drawings with the President of the French Republic and Marianne, at the time of the evening of the Referendum on France 2. The drawing puts in scene a Marianne made sleepy, " catch in levrette" by isn't President Jacques Chirac questioning “ It true that she sleeps??? ”, in a tended legal context: the Court of appeal has just ruled on the immunity of a President-in-Office, in reference to the business of the embezzlements and fictional jobs of the RPR of the years 1990.
Plantu must leave the buildings of the Monde the May 22nd 2001, but continues its collaboration with the daily newspaper. the Express train publishes in Christmas the drawings of the year 2001, drawn with 600.000 specimens. Plantu celebrates in 2002 its 15.000 drawings published and the 30 years of its collaboration with Le Monde .
Become an institution, the drawing of Plantu lays down three objectives: to create a graphic “excitation”, to give the smile to the reader and to cause the reflection.
