The Musée Plantin-Moretus is located on Vrijdagmarkt ( Place of Friday ) at Antwerp. It is at the 16th century that was created the printing works Plantin, directed by Christophe Plantin. Printing works was managed after its death by his/her son-in-law Jean Moretus then by wire of this one.
In 1876, Edouard Moretus sold printing works and all its material at the town of Antwerp. One year later, in 1877, it was possible to visit the printing works and the contiguous dwelling house. In 2002, the museum was proposed with an inscription on the Liste of the world heritage of the UNESCO, which was actée in 2005. It should be noted that it was besides the first museum with being ever recorded on this prestigious list.
In addition to its exceptional architectural value, the monument contains an important collection of objects testifying to the life and work in the printing works and the most prolific publisher of Europe at the end of XVIe century. The museum shelters not only two of the oldest presses of printing works of the world, as well as sets of punches, dies and other block letters, true typographical treasures, but also a very rich library of works, priceless files as well as a very beautiful furniture of which a painting of Pierre-Paul Rubens, a Plantin family friend.
