Planets (" プラネテス " in Japanese, transcription of the old Greek word " ΠΛΑΝΗΤΕΣ" who means " vagabond" and which is at the origin of the French word " planète") is a Manga in four volumes of Makoto Yukimura (appeared in episodes in the Japanese magazine Weekly Morning ), adapted in a series of animation of 26 episodes.
The action is in a near future. In 2075, a group of experienced astronauts works with recovery of the remains in orbit around the Earth.
History
To the beginning of the Manga, we follow the daily newspaper of a team of recovery of space remains (satellite out of use, remainders of multi-stage rockets, or more usually of the small pieces resulting from the collision of larger machines between them), employed by Technora Corp. But very quickly it is discovered that this is right a basic context in order to develop of another subjects, concerning one of the characters, such as: an young man who claims himself almost asocial but which ends up falling in love, the difficulty in making the mourning of a missing person, the tendency to fall down in childhood when all is badly, etc In fact, all these personal little stories which constitute a great part of the Manga make it possible to discover the personalities of the four main characters, or their goal in the life. Let us note that, as of the medium, and until the end of the Manga, the principal screen will not be really any more the team of recovery of débrits but the integration of the main character in a mission towards Jupiter.
Characters
En Japanese writing, the name is written in first whereas in Roman or Russian characters, the first name is written in premier. Here four main characters:
- Hachirota Hoshino (星野八郎太) is the main character. He is always called " Hachimaki" or " Hachi" (Japanese word for " bandeau" , because it always carries one from there). Its dream always was to have a spaceship with him, but between the high cost of such a jewel and its low wages (the team of remains recovery is often called the " half-section" …) added to the mockeries of the others on this subject, it ends up wondering whether it is really realistic… Finally its dream will become the integration of the team of the vessel of the first mission towards Jupiter. The father of Hachi is a highly skilled space engineer (having belonged to the first mission towards Mars), and the relations between the father and the son are seldom with the good shape. His/her brother is him also attracted by space, but the top of its young age it tests just constuire small rockets, and its crisis of adolescence added to little respect which it has for his big brother results them in disputing with each rare time that they are seen. Hachi is always behind a carapace seldom letting appear the feelings (with share irritation), particularly the feelings in love.
-
Have Tanabe (田名部愛) is the last arrival with the section of the remains. It is a solar and sincere, but suffering girl of a lack of confidence in itself. As it is the " nouvelle" , it has very to learn, and regards Hachi as being its " Senpai" (= Higher), and its eternal use of the concept of love to consider any situation bringing into play feelings will maintain a very particular relation between them.
-
Fee Carmichael is controls it " Toy Box" , the vessel of remains recovery. Of a rather explosive temperament, it has tendency to quickly putting itself in anger, but it is in general for the good cause. It is a accro cigarette, but in space, the places to smoke are very rare and rarefy (that will be a starting point of one of the many secondary stories of the manga), which perhaps explains its sudden changes of mood. It is of origin American, already married, and has a child; its family lives in Florida.
-
Yuri Mihalkov (ЮрийМихалков) is the Russian member of the team. Very calm, and always posting the same mine, it is not less sensitive and nice. He also speaks very little, even of itself, at such a point that his/her comrades will know only seven years after he had integrated the section of the remains why he wanted to work in space. In fact, he seeks has to recover - and he succeeds - one of the remains resulting from the accident of a shuttle active in England where him and his wife, which lost the life there, was momentary. This débrit is a compass, which will make it possible Yuri to do its work of mourning, because this object was expensive with his wife whose body was never found.
Other important characters take seat in the history, here the fast description of most important: Werner Rocksmith is the chief of the project Von Braun (mission towards Jupiter); Nono is a twelve year old girl who passed all her life on the Moon for therapeutic reasons; Harry Roland is a former very known astronaut who puts an end to his life when one diagnoses a disease to him which will in the future empèchera it of going in space; Hakim is an astronaut trained by the same professor that formed Hachi, which will sink in terrorism for a justifiable cause, just as Claire Rond, the ex-small friend of Hachi…
