Plane tree of Occident
The plane tree of Occident is a species of Arbre of the family of the Platanacée S used like ornamental tree. This species originating in North America was introduced in Western Europe during the XVIIe century. The American common noun is " sycamore" , not to confuse with the sycamore of Europe (which is a maple).
Description
The plane tree of Occident is a large tree which can reach 50 meters in height, with broad houppier of ovoid general form. The bark brown clearly and smooth is surbedded by round plates leaving of the yellowish spots, especially on the large branches, more than on the trunk.The Sheet S null and void, alternate, are as broad as long (from 15 to 25 cm). They are with webbed nervation and count three or five acute and toothed lobes, not very deep.
The Fleur S, unisexuées, without Perianth, are joined together in hanging globulous kittens and generally recluse, contrary to the other species of plane trees.
The Fruit S are small Akène S grouped of balls or Glomérules 3 cm in diameter.
Distribution
This species is originating in North America, mainly of the east of the the United States (until the Texas and to the Wisconsin) and of the Canada (Ontario).Also cultivated in the other continents, but almost disappeared from Europe where it was supplanted by the common Platane.
Use
The plane tree of Occident is used as ornamental tree, especially in North America.Its wood is usable in joinery.
