The plane of Canjuers is an arid calcareous plate of Provence, located in the department of the Var in the Préalpes de Castellane, in the south of the Gorges of the Verdon and with 30km of the town of Draguignan.

Geography

Of an average altitude of 800m, the plate of Canjuers is divided into two great parts: the Great Plan of long Canjuers of 15km towards the east broad of 10km and the Small Plan of Canjuers the long of 5km towards north and broad of 2km. The plate is encircled by assembly lines like the Grand Margins (1577m) in north, Mocrouis (1061m) in the west, the serrière of Lagne (1118 m), the collet of the Eagle (1118m) and the mountain of Barjaude (1173) in the south. Other many plans, smaller, are present behind the mountains like the plan of Cluaye, the plan of the Castle of Lagne, the plan of Auveine or the plan of Sauvechane. Its calcareous and karstic rock created a rough ground, composed of many swallow-holes like the Large Swallow-hole of Canjuers, the Swallow-hole of Nouguière or the Field deï Faioun.
Sur the plate, the vegetation is rare because its ground is very arid, it is especially made up of Garrigue (small bushes, grasses and plants aromatic). The forests are present on the mountains neighborhood. The trees are mainly pubescent oaks (33% of the vegetation), woodland pines (25%) and pines of Alep (20%). It is also a place of speleology: it is one of the largest subterranean water basins of Europe, thanks to the many swallow-holes.

Before the catch of the territory by the Army, the area had very a weak density, but there were several properties, farms and hamlets which are now ruins some, destroyed or inhabited by the members of the camp One can quote the hamlets of Saint-Bayon, Chardan, the Bar or the farms of Large Nouguière, Cluaye, Medicine or lived the last witch of Provence before the First World War, the castle of Lagne, the New and different Cabaret.

History

Called " Julii" campus; at the time of the passage of Jules César for the conquest of the Gaulle, the plan preserves in particular several Roman milliary columns. The plan is also an important place of archaeological excavations. It preserves many fossils at it dating from the Jurassic and the Crétacé.

During spring and the summer 1944 the plate of Canjuers was used as a basis for the " Vallier" maquis; , the maquis Armed secret with the VAr. A maquis ftp, the " Robert" camp; was based with Aups very close from there.

The rally of the Miles Tracks was held there.

The Military camp

This plate shelters since 1970 the Camp of Canjuers managed by the Army. It is the largest field of fire in continental Europe of dimensions: 60km on 20km. It has zones dedicated to the combat of tanks (Field of fire of Lagne for the mobile shootings, field of fire of the Almond trees for the fixed shootings), to the artillery shootings and the combat of infantry and allows operations interarmes. It lays out, moreover of the rare possibility of authorizing shootings of multiple exercises of rocket launcher (LRM). This so much liked place of Jean Giono then became interdict with the public without the authorization. The village of Brovès in particular was evacuated of force and was left with the abandonment. The inhabitants were then rehoused in a hamlet called Brovès-in-Seillans more in valley not far from Seillans.

One recently notes the presence of the wolf in the military camp. The plan is all the same always a place of rabasse, but also a place of grazing grounds for the sheep.
