Plan-the-Waddings

Plan-the-Waddings is a common Suisse of the Canton of Geneva.

Plan-the-waddings is a commune including/understanding four hamlets, Plan-the-Waddings, Arare, Saconnex-d' Arve and the Vault. Inhabited by 9320 people, the commune with a surface of 588 hectares. Its name would have like origin water, from its Gothic root wato or gwatt. Its armorial bearings point out its old union with Compesières (the Maltese cross) which refers to the victorious combat of the Genevese against the troops of the Duke of Savoy, in June 1589, and with the camps of the militia of the 19th century (l´épée).

History

Genevese since 1816, the area belonged to the commune of Compesières which rented with the state of Geneva the plain of the Waddings to establish the camp of the militia there. Thus the Plain accommodated, of 1819 with 1875, the men achieving their military exercises.

It is on June 16th, 1851 that Plan-the-Waddings, from its will of independence, was divided commune of Compesières, by decision of the Council of State. The new commune “top” included/understood Bardonnex, Charrot, Landecy and Evordes, that of “bottom” gathered Arare, Saconnex-d' Arve and Plan-the-Waddings, the commune independent of Plan-the-Waddings was born on July 1st, 1851.

Village of some 3 ' 500 hearts in 1970, Plan-the-Waddings became a suburban commune of more than 9 ' 000 inhabitants. Of agricultural origin, commutes it saw many industries being established on the market-gardening part of its territory to give rise to a famous industrial park (ZIPLO) . Demographic awakening and economic place the commune with crossroads of a historical heritage and future prospects. It takes care however to preserve its quality of life, by supporting village festivals and demonstrations essential factors of social integration, sporting and cultural.
