Plain of Plainpalais

The flat of Plainpalais is a free space of construction of: 78135 m2 located in the middle of the Swiss town of Geneva in .

Localization

The plain is located at the center of the district of Plainpalais. In the form of rhombus 640 meters length on 200 of broad and directed North-South, it is bordered in the west by the avenue of the Email and in the east by the avenue Henri Dunant and the boulevard Georges Favon. At its northern end the place of the Circus is, at its southern end, the place of the Twenty-three cantons and, in the center of its east coast, the roundabout of Plainpalais.

It is cut, in its northern end, by the street Harry Marc and is furrowed by several pedestrian ways.

History

Located at the center of the Delta formed by the Arve before its junction with the the Rhone, the zone of the plain of Plainpalais is an island which is gradually transformed into Pâturage during the Moyen-Âge following work of draining of the Marais.

Gradually transformed into space of leisures, the Plain is surrounded by trees as of 1637 and takes its current dimensions and its form in 1662 at the time of the disappearance of the fortifications of the city. In 1848, the Plain becomes the property of the Commune of Plainpalais and, in 1896, is the site of the national Exposition. As from this time, the Plain regularly accommodates the markets in fruit and vegetables of the area. November 9th, 1932, a shooting bursts on the southern end of the Plain, killing 13 demonstrators. A memorial was drawn up at the place of the demonstration.

Today naked, made of several peeled lawns and partly asphalted, the Plain with the pace of an immense waste ground, except for the extreme point on the rhombus, the side places Circus, which is an arranged and decorated garden of a fountain. Several projects of refitting were launched by the city and the Canton of Geneva. As of 1998, a first phase of repair made it possible to test a new floor covering and, following the voting by the Municipal council in May 2007 of a credit of work, the second phase should begin in 2008, to see 2009 according to certain sources.

Use

The Plain offers a site reserved to the play of Pétanque, a slope for roller skates and skate-board as well as a big space encloses with plays for children and a glacier. The center of the place is frequently used for various annual demonstrations, such as the Cirque Knie, the fun fairs. The circumference of the Place, when with him, accommodates a market with early products every Tuesday and Fridays, as well as large a Flea market Wednesdays and Saturdays.
