Plaimpied-Givaudins

Plaimpied-Givaudins is a common French, located in the department of the Cher and the area Center. Its inhabitants are called the plaimpiedois.

Geography

History

The origin of the name of Plaimpied-Givaudins goes back to two Latin components:
- " Planum" , which means " plat" , evolved to " plaim"
- " Podium" who means " hill arrondie" and ended up giving " pied". The origin of the name of Givaudins is more obscure.

Richard II, archbishop of Bourges, founded in Plaimpied an important abbey of regular canons been subject to the rule of Saint-Augustin. Started at the end of the 11th century, the abbey church dedicated to Saint Martin was finished only more than one hundred years afterwards.

The two communities of inhabitants of Plaimpied and Givaudins were joined together in only one commune per royal decree of the February 24th 1842 whereas before, Givaudins depended closely on Bourges and the religious communities which were installed there.

  • Church Romance Saint Martin's day 11th century (1080), old abbey, altered: square bell-tower, Romance capital representing the Temptation of the Christ, Apse arched in Bottom of furnace, Crypt with 3 naves, funerary inscriptions 12th century and Abraham low-relief 12th century, stoups 12th century. It was classified historic building in 1853.
