Placid Massey
Placid Massey , the large benefactor of the town of Tarbes, was born to with it the October 4th 1777 from Anne Marmouget and Jean Massey, a Master shoe-maker. As of 1778, it remained with number 9 of the street of the Large-Ditches. It made its studies at the central School of Tarbes, current Lycée Théophile Gautier. He was pupil and assistance-pharmacist at Lécussan, with number 11 of the Marcadieu place. At the 18 years age, it gave up this employment and engaged in the Armée.
A few years afterwards, it left the army and became the assistant of Louis Ramond (1755-1827). In 1808, it was named the intendant of the gardens of the queen Hortense (in France and Holland). It carried out, on the order of the king Louis-Philippe, of very important plantations of trees, in the plain of Trianon, Chèvreloup and with the park of Saint-Cloud. It also ensured, as of 1819, the direction of the kitchen garden of Versailles. In 1829 and 1852, it bought, in Tarbes, of the grounds to create a large garden and planted trees there. In 1850, it took its retirement and made build its house and continues the plantation of trees to the rare gasolines. He died in Tarbes the November 18th 1853, at the 75 years age, and was buried with the Midsummer's Day cemetery. He bequeathed his garden, the Jardin Massey, and almost all his goods at the town of Tarbes.
Its will:
“I give to the commune of Tarbes, my birthplace, all the buildings which I have on his territory and consistent in garden of ornament, seedbed, houses, meadows, the garden of ornament to be used as walk; the seedbed to continue the culture of fruit trees, the houses and meadows to employ their products with the maintenance of the garden of ornament and the seedbed. As the products cannot be sufficient for the maintenance of the garden of ornament because of the wintergarden that I make there build, I give moreover, with the commune of Tarbes, sixty actions of the Railroad of north which will produce approximately two thousand francs per annum. ”
