Placid Cappeau

Placide Cappeau was born the October 25th 1808 at 8 a.m. in the evening with Roquemaure (Gard). He is the son of Mathieu Cappeau, wet cooper, and of Agathe Louise Martinet.

Initially intended to succeed his/her father in the family company (exploitation of some vines and a cooperage); following an accident, it is directed towards the studies. Indeed, at the eight years age, playing then with one of his/her comrades, called Brignon, which handled says one a firearm, the Cappeau young person must be amputee of the right hand. Thanks to the financial aid of Mr Brignon who takes part in half for the school fees, Placide Cappeau, after having followed the elementary school, enters to the Royal College of Avignon where in spite of his infirmity it takes down a first price of drawing in 1825.

After secondary studies with Nimes and an arts baccalaureat out of pocket, it continues studies of right to Paris and obtains a license in 1831.

Wine merchant and spirits of profession, he is also poet and author of the text of the famous song the “Christian Minuit” which he would have written, according to its dires, on December 3rd 1847, in the diligence which led it to Paris, between Mâcon and Dijon… In fact, this famous canticle was composed before 1847 in circumstances apparently more banal (see the article " Midnight chrétiens" in the present encyclopedia). Although he was the author of what the type-setter of the music of this canticle, Adolphe Adam celebrates it, called the " Marseillaise religieuse" , Placide Cappeau was socialist, republican and… anticlerical.

He also wrote “the castle of Roquemaure” published in 1876 (" historical poem in twenty chants" of more than 9000 French worms), “the king of broad bean”, “poetry”, “the butterfly” and “the pink”. It accepted in its living rooms the great names of the Félibrige in particular Frederic Mistral, Joseph Roumanille, Alphonse Daudet… It was also in relation to Alphonse of Lamartine.

He dies at the 69 years age on August 8th 1877 with Roquemaure.
