Place des Héros (Budapest)

The place of the Heroes ( Hősök tere in Hungarian) is one of the principal places of Budapest, capital of the Hungary. It is at the end of the avenue Andrássy , between the Dózsa György út and the Hungária Körút , close to the municipal park.

The place of the Heroes and the avenue Andrássy were registered with the world heritage by UNESCO.

Two important buildings surround the place: the Museum of Beautiful arts ( Szépmüvészeti Muzeum ) on the left and the Palate of Arts on the right.

Other side, the place of the Heroes faces the Andrassy avenue whose two buildings give on the place. One of these buildings is residential and the other is the embassy of Serbia (old Yugoslav embassy where Imre Nagy took refuge in 1956).

Behind the place the municipal park ( Városliget ) with in particular the zoological garden is ( Allatkert ) and a restaurant. In the park the museum of Transport and strong Vajdahunyad are.

In the center of the place of the Heroes the Monument of the Millenium, built is to celebrate the millenium of Hungary. The monument was built of 1896 with 1922 and is composed of a gallery of colonnades in half-circle. In the center the statues of seven Magyar kings are.

In half-circle statues are representing a series of famous Hungarians having influenced the history of the country. The unit is crowned of imposing a 45 m height column with the archangel Gabriel at the top. On the place also the war memorial of the release of 1848 is reproduced - 1849 and a equestrian Statue of King Árpád surrounded comrades in arms.

The half-circle represents principal kings de Hongrie, in particular Etienne Ier of Hungary, Géza, Géza Ier of Hungary, Coloman of Hungary, Géza II of Hungary, Béla Ier of Hungary, Béla II of Hungary, André Ier of Hungary, André II of Hungary, André III of Hungary, Charles Robert of Hungary, Louis Ier of Hungary, Sigismond of Luxembourg, Jean Hunyadi Matthias Corvin, Vladislav II of Hungary, Louis II of Hungary, Ferdinand de Habsbourg, Ferenc Rákóczy II, combatants of the release Lajos Kossuth, Tancsics, Dózsa György etc…

In the center of the imposing place is the monument of Imre Nagy, hero and martyr of freedom, assassinated in 1956 by the Russians and buried in a secret place. Its body was found in the wood of the surroundings of Budapest. The June 16th 1989, its body was buried in the monument of the place of the Heroes in the presence of a crowd of: 250000  people. The monument is kept permanently by military sentinels.

The place of the Heroes is also the name of a station of the M1 line of the Métro of Budapest.
