Place de la République (Erevan)

The place of the Republic is the central place of Erevan. It is surrounded of the national museum of the History of Arménie, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the ministry for transport and communications, the building of the government, the main post office, the hotel Marriott Armenia and the park to the 2750 fountains.

History

The plce was drawn by the architect Alexandre Tamanian and the central oval was built as of the Années 1930. But it is only in the Années 1970 that the place ends up having its current face.

During the Soviet era, the place named “Lénine Place”, as in the majority of the capitals of the Soviet republics of the time. A statue of Lénine trônait there besides. It is in 1991, year of the independence of the country, that the place finds its name current and that the statue is unbolted.

Since, the place underwent several face lift: enlargings of the pavements, repaving of the center of the place, replacement of the statue of Lénine by a giant screen. This last was withdrawn fine 2006 and will be replaced by a work of art already selected by contest.

Contemporary time

Nowadays, the place is the meeting place of Erevantsis for all the special occasionss: New year, festival of end of school year, national Festival (September 21st) and more recently the concert of Charles Aznavour in 2006 for the opening of the year of Arménie.

Buildings

Few buildings surrounding the place date from the years 1930. The majority are imagined and at that time built in the years 1970 with the agreement of Brejnev. They are in fact rather representative of Soviet architecture. Although solid masses and imposing, their originality is due to the stone of Tuf pink and white which decorates their frontages.

National gallery of Arménie

The national gallery of Arménie is the principal museum of the country. The building built out of white stone and decorated on its square of a large fountain throne basin truly on the place of the Republic.

Its permanent exposure is of an exceptional richness with works of Aivazovsky, Theodore Rousseau, Monticelli or Eugene Boudin. Some temporary exhibitions took place these last years ( Earth seen of the sky of Yann Arthus-Bertrand in 2005, exposure on the Italy and the Arménie in 2006…).

Armenia hotel

Splendid masonry in pink Tuff, the Armenia hotel is the mythical hotel of Erevan. At the time Soviet already, the company Intourist which was owner received tourists of all the the USSR, even of the rest of the world.

To the fall of the Communism, the hotel falls in disuse. It is only after the end of the crisis of the beginning of the Années 1990 and the tourist renewal of activity, that restorations take seat. In 2002, the american company Marriott repurchases the hotel and finishes putting it at the Western standards of one 4 stars.

2750 fountains

In the Park located just behind the old statue of Lénine, are established in five successive basins, 2750 fountains. They were built under the Soviet era , in 1968, to celebrate the 2750e birthday of the town of Erevan.
A multitude of coffee terraces surround the basins.
