Place Stanislas

The place Stanislas (or Stanisłas places), called familiarly by Apocope place Stan' , is an urban unit traditional located at Nancy, in the area Lorraine, in France, and registered with the world heritage of UNESCO.

History

This Royal Place was built between 1751 and 1755 in the honor of king de France by Stanislas Leszczyński, former king of Poland and father-in-law of Louis XV, which accepted the Duché of Lorraine in 1737. Named Royal Place, this place of beautiful proportions (106 × 124 m) will receive in 1831 its name of Stanislas Place.

The architect is Emmanuel Héré. It is surrounded by six monumental grids in ironwork raised of gold sheets, signed by Jean Lamour. In its center the statue in foot of Stanislas is located, instead of that of Louis XV who has there throne of 1755 until his destruction at the time of the French revolution. The current statue goes back to 1831 and made following a subscription of the departments of the Meuse, Meurthe and the Vosges.

The houses of the Place are distributed as follows:

  • the most impressive Town hall (since its construction), of the buildings;
  • four large houses: the Hotel of the Queen, the Jacquet house, the Opera-Theater (old évêché) and the Museum of the Art schools;
  • two small houses, less high which open the prospect, since the Town hall, on and the Place Triumphal arch of the Career.

Much more than one simple Royal Place , it is in fact in the center of a single town-planning in Europe gathering the great institutions of the time while making the union between the City-Old woman (medieval) and Villeneuve (transition 16th-17th centuries).

It is registered since 1983 on the list of the world heritage of UNESCO, as well as the other places of this incredible urban center, namely: the place of the Career and place of Alliance (see its card on the official list).

It was restored in 2004 - 2005, at the time of its 250e birthday. This restoration included the exclusion of the hackney carriages and a handing-over on level of paving. The restoration gives place all the year to many festivities: Nancy 2005, the time of the lights.
