The place Saint-Marc (of the name of the protective Apostle Christian of Venice Holy Marc) at the edge of the Large Channel, with the Basilica Saint-Marc, the bell-tower of Saint-Marc and the Palais of the Doges is the heart of the town of Venice in Italy.
If it has today an interest above all historical, architectural and tourist, it was in the past the center Politique, religious and economic of the République of Venice. It is called by Napoleon Bonaparte “the most elegant living room of Europe”,
This place, the only one to deserve this title ( piazza ) with Venice, all others being called campo , form an irregular quadrilateral bordered of arcades and remarkable Monument S. Its arcades shelter coffees and shops of tourism whose Café Florian celebrates it 1720 with its Symphony orchestra in terrace (7,50 € the Cappuccino and 8,67 € the):
The part of the place which joined the Grand Channel, between the Palais of the Doges and the Biblioteca Marciana is called " Piazzetta dei Leoncini ". It comprises two surmounted columns, for that of left, of the winged Lion in Bronze of holy Marc the evangelist, and for that of right-hand side, Saint Theodore in Marbre. A superstition would like that a Vénitien truth never passes between the columns. It is possible that the fact that formerly it was the place of the capital executions is there for something.
The place Saint-Marc, very popular with his famous Pigeon S, attracts in any season a crowd of tourists and photographers. The pigeons can be nourished by the tourists only on this place.
The Saint-Marc place is regularly flooded for the periods of high waters of the Lagune.
