Place Royale (Nantes)

The Royal Place , located in the middle of Nantes, was conceived in 1788 by the Nantes architect Mathurin Crucy.

Presentation

Crucy, also the originator of the Place Graslin, connected it to the Royale place by the street Crébillon (thus named in homage to the poet of the XVIIIe century Prosper Jolyot, sior of Crais-Balk).

It respected, for the place Royale, the principles of the Classical architecture: symmetry of the frontages, rigor of the plan, opening of the prospects. A fountain, symbol of the city, throne in its center.

The fountain

Set up in 1865, the monumental fountain symbolizes the river and maritime vocation of Nantes. The city, under the features of a woman crowned, day before on the the Loire and its affluents: the Erdre, the Separates, the Cher and the Loiret. Eight geniuses of industry and the trade point out the important role of the port in the economy of the city.

The statues are the work of the sculptors Daniel Ducommun de Locle and Guillaume Grootaërs, as well as Nantes founder Jean Simon Voruz, the creator of the staircase of the Passage Pommeraye.

Current events

The Royale place was renovated during the end of the year 2006 in order to make it more pedestrian. This transformation was inaugurated by Jean-Marc Ayrault, on April 6th, 2007. The fountain of the place is in the course of restoration during the summer 2007.

Within the framework of biennial of the contemporary art Estuary 2007, the Royale place accommodates the creation of Tatsu Nishi, Hôtel Nantes.
