Place Flandres-Dunkerque
The place Flandres-Dunkirk is a Roundabout common Frenchwoman of Montpellier. Located at the south-west of its territory, it constitutes one of the principal entries of them on the road of Toulouse, with horse on the 6 {{E}} and 7 {{E}} cantons of Montpellier.
Named according to the Battle of Dunkirk of 1940 of the Second world war, the place crosses the Trunk road 113, axis of access to the city, and the avenues of the Colonel-Pavelet and Vanières who allow the skirting of the center by the west from the exit n°31 of the highway A9.
Contemporary art
Locally, the place is called “ roundabout of the Great M ” because of the installation of 1984 with 1986 of a work of Christophe and François Morellet, ordered by the municipality with the participation of the National center of the visual arts. Two structures of several meters of top hat of V reversed are laid out inside the place. They form a “M” (initial of Montpellier) for which comes from outside or the downtown area. South-western external side, the structure of left is made tubes of Métal, that of right-hand side and in withdrawal of Rondin S of Bois. From night, neons diffuse a blue light on the unit. This work of art made much speak about it in the local newspapers at the time of its installation.
Installation of the district
During its creation, the roundabout is surrounded of the districts of the south of Estanove in north, of Cross-in Argent in the west, each one being on both sides avenue of Toulouse. In the south, the district develops of Farmhouse-of-Bagnères.The roundabout was the subject of refittings aiming at returning it more circulating with side tracks to several of its entries and the passage to four ways of the two axes.
In the years 2000, the town hall makes an effort to densifier the districts around the crossroads by the installation of the district of the Grisettes and the Ovalie district. The integration of important equipment shows this will of development of the south-west of the city, like the stage Yves-of-Manor, the passage of the second tram line in the south of Farmhouse-of-Bagnères or the field of agglomeration of Providence in the west of the Flandres-Dunkirk place.
