Pit of Kouriles

The pit of Kouriles , sometimes also called pit Kouriles-Kamtchatka is a major and narrow underwater depression located in the Pacific Ocean created by the collision of two tectonic plates: the Plate of the Pacific and the Plate of Okhotsk. Its maximum depth is of 10.542 meters.

The depression (the Subduction) of the Pacifique plate under the plate of Okhotsk is at the origin of the pit and generates an intense volcanic activity with the edge of the plate under which it is inserted which is at the origin of the archipelago of Kouriles.
