Pit
A pit generally indicates, with the clean direction, a Cavité whose entry opens in the ground (in opposition to a Caverne or a Grotte, whose entry opens in or a wall). There exist many synonyms according to the areas: Swallow-hole, Igue, Scialet, Choroum, Abyss, Hollow, Loss, Chantoir, Barrenc, etc
The Gouffre of Padirac is one of most known in France.
The pits are explored and studied by the Spéléologue S.
With the illustrated direction, a pit indicates a place, a phenomenon or a thing which involve the brutal disappearance of all that can be precipitated there (example: its stomach is a pit, this house is a pit with dough,…)
In particular, in the Imagery popular or childish, a pit is an alarming and dangerous place, from where all horrible sorts of thing can emerge and in which any thing can disappear forever. The pit symbolizes the Peur of the unknown.
