The pistil or gynécée is the body female of the Plante S with Fleur S. It is made of one or more Carpelle S and constitutes the fourth Verticille composing the flower.

The pistil can be:

  • dialycarpellé: the carpelles ones remain distinct from/to each other and laid out in spiral or Verticille;
  • gamocarpellés: the carpelles ones are welded, concrescent, and compose an ovary is unilocular (only one ovary whatever the number of carpelles) or plurilocular (ovary divided into as many cabins as there are the carpelles ones).

The concrescence of carpelles can be more or less complete and concern, for example, the ovaries but not the styles which remain free.

Concrescence can further go and relate to the other floral verticils, according to the position of the pistil on the floral Réceptacle:

  • ovary supère, the pistil fits on the same plan as the other floral verticils or slightly above;
  • ovary infère, the pistil, or at least the ovary, tends to be inserted in the floral receptacle which grows hollow in the shape of cut or ballot box.

In this last case, which characterizes the most advanced Espèce S, the ovary infère can become adherent receptacle and base of the other floral parts.
