Pistia stratiotes

Pistia stratiotes , sometimes called “water lettuce”, is a species of plant of the family of the Araceae . One finds it in America, in Asia, Africa, Oceania and it is introduced in Europe. It is the currently accepted species of the kind Pistia .

This species does not have, at first sight, the air of a Araceae . This tropical floating plant, that one on our premises cultivates like plants of aquarium or greenhouse, multiplies quickly via rejections. In many tropical areas it constitutes like the Jacinthe of water, Eichhornia crassipes , a true plague which makes the rivers impracticable for navigation. The water lettuce has a not very visible inflorescence, which appears in the center of the rivet washer of sheets of the adult plants.
