Pisanello (Pisa towards 1380 - Rome towards 1455), of its true name Antonio di Puccio Pisano (or Antonio di Puccio da Cereto ), named wrongly Vittore Pisano by Giorgio Vasari is a painter, medaillist and miniaturist of the Italian Renaissance and Quattrocento, last representing international Gothic style.

He lived and worked with Vérone, Mantoue, Ferrare, Rome, Naples.

Portrait of a princess of Este

Work was probably carried out between 1435 and 1449 at the time of the first years of presence of Pisanello at the court of Ferrare.

Painting represents a noble lady, of profile, identified as being Ginevra d' Este, sister of reigning prince Leonello. To certify the identification, the blazon of the family is embroidered on the sleeve of its dress and represents a vase with double handle. Moreover, one small branch of Genévrier (clearly reference with its Ginevra first name) comes to confirm the assumption.

Its pale silhouette, is detached from a dark and flowered hedge. These flowers would be an allusion to the tragic destiny of the young woman, married to 14 years with Sigismondo Malatesta, lord of Rimini, which would have poisoned it to marry another of them. Indeed, the Ancolie S and the Oeillet S are symbols of died and pain, as well as the butterfly S which in Greek are a homonym of the word " âme".
