Pirro Ligorio

Pirro Ligorio (Naples, ~1510 - Ferrare, October 30th, 1583) is an architect Maniériste, a painter, an antique dealer and a draftsman of Italian garden.

In 1534 it leaves to Rome, where it develops an growing interest for Roman antiquities and is named superintendant with the old monuments by the pope Pie IV and Paul IV.

In 1549, it begins excavations with the Villa of Adrien with Tivoli and outline its masterpiece, the dancing waters of the Villa for the cardinal Hippolyte d' Este.

He also plays a part for the fountains of the Lante Villa to Bagnaio while working with Vignole. Its mannerism is present at the Villa Pia (Casina Pio IV) of the the Vatican (1559-1562).

In 1568, it is congédié by the pope Paul V to have criticized work of Michel-Angel to Saint-Pierre of Rome and leaves in Ferrare where he is the guest of the duke Alphonse II of Este.

By its studies of Roman antiquities, its most famous work published is the chart of old Rome, Antiquae Urbis Image of 1561.

He is probably the author of the drawings of the Jardins of Bomarzo.
