Pirot , in Serb Cyrillic Пирот, is a city and a municipality of Serbia located in the district of Pirot. The town of Pirot is the administrative center of the district. In 2002, it counted 40.678 inhabitants and the municipality of which it is center 63.791.
The town of Pirot is located on an importance route transportation, halfway between Niš and Sofia.
The first mentions of this central part of the Balkans go up with the ancient Greece. The Greeks were interested by this area because the Royaume of Macedonia, their large adversary, was frequently in war with the Balkan people.
About the year 14 before Jesus Christ, at the beginning of the reign of Auguste, this area was at the border with the provinces of Mésie and Thrace.
Thereafter a military road was built there, connecting Singidunum (Belgrade), Naissus (Niš), Serdica (Sofia), Andrinople with Constantinople. Along the road, colonists started to settle and the romanisation started. Under the reign of Dioclétien (284 - 305), Pirot was annexed to the province of Dacie (Dacia Méditerranéa).
During the 4th century the area knew one period of invasions, in particular on behalf of Gothic tribes, then at the 5th century it was the invasion of the Huns.
The emperor Justinien (527 - 565) ordered the construction of thirty fortresses in the area going of Niš to Sofia.
At the 6th century and the 7th century, the Slaves populated Balkans. And of the end of the 8th century until the beginning of the 11th century, the area of Pirot belonged to the First Empire Bulgarian.
The most important company of the area is the Tigar company which manufactures tires.
Pirot is the birthplace of the musician Vojislav Vučković.
