Piranshahr (Persan: پیرانشهر, Kurdish: Xanê (trans. Khane )) is a city located in the province of Azerbaijan of the west at the western north of the Iran. The Persan name means the town of Piran and it seems that this name is derived from the name of the local Kurdish tribe, Piran . The tribes of Piranshahr are divided into 4 groups, respectively named Mamesh, Mangoor, Piran and Belbas. These tribes have their own lifestyle and move from one place to another according to the seasonal migrations.

The city is located at the west of the Lac of Orumieh at an altitude of approximately 1300 meters above the sea level.

Piranshahr is one of the frontier towns between Iran and Iraq. The mountains called Siyah Kuh and Sipan are respectively in the North-West and the south of the city. The Zaab river takes its source in these mountains.

The town of Piranshahr and its surroundings produce a complete range of 100 different types of granite, varying all colors and in textures.
