Pioneers of the Foreign legion

The pioneers of the Foreign legion form a unit of Tradition S. They at the head ravel troops at the time of the catches of weapons and carry barb, apron of buffalo and axe to the shoulder.

It is the only unit of this type in service within the French Army.

History of the pioneers

At the beginning of the 18th century, small units of pioneers, the " carry-haches" in the companies of Pomegranate S, are born within the Régiment S of the French Army. Their mission is then to go up to the attack at the head of the other units in order to destroy the possible obstacles drawn up by the enemy.

After a rather random presence under the Revolution, the pioneers reappear under the Consulat, capped bearskins of pomegranates but without the metal plate.

These units dissolved in 1818, then are recreated in 1822
