A pinup is a attracting Femme which one hangs usually an image on a corner of wall, from where the word “Pine Up Girl” which is literally translated into French by “young girl punaized with the wall”.

History

The first use of the word is attested in 1941. But the concept appears earlier, at the beginning of the century, under the name of Gibson Girls (of the name of their creator) and its alternatives (“Pretty Girls”, “Varga Girl”, “Christy Girl”, etc) the first “pinups servant boys” and the dessinatrices (Joyce Ballantyne, Pearl Frush, Zoë Mozert…) also made their appearance.

Femme fatale, headstock, Sex-symbol, the pinup is represented by her creators like the ideal woman. The pinups, provocantes without being vulgar, appear on magazines, newspapers, posters, calendars or “charts of arts”, small labels to be collected which helped with the popularization of the pinups. One finds them in the Seventies in the cabins of the truck-drivers knowing that, as of the Second world war, GI posted these illustrations on the fuselages of their planes. They are now sought by the collectors.

The golden age of the pinups is in the Années 1940 and 1950, mainly with the the United States. One can in particular quote Alberto Vargas or Gil Elvgren, illustrators emblematic of this period.

One for some time witnesses an renewed interest for these egeries of the Fifties with the arrival of models celebrating this time. The fashion, the magazines, the artists give the style pinup to the last style. Besides certain models as Dita von Teese make this current their trademark.
