The pinku eiga (ピンク映画, sometimes transcribed pink eiga , pinku-eiga or pink-eiga ) means “pink cinema literally” and indicates
an erotic form of cinema Japanese. Afterwards
1971, the studios Nikkatsu called Romance porn their pinku eiga .
The kind pinku eiga
This term is composed of the English word
pink , meaning pink, and of the word
Japanese
eiga , meaning cinema. The kind
pinku eiga gathers
films with more or less erotic content, without the erotism being
necessarily the central object of film: the first
pinku eiga were
often judged films obscenes for some anecdotic scenes the naked ones,
and censures it, which in particular prohibited to show pilosities or of the bodies
genital, forced the realizers to maintain the interest the spectator
by means of conventional cinematographic processes. The
pinku eiga
would be thus to bring closer to the
Softcore or
Cinema of exploitation (more precisely,
sexploitation ).
The scenario remains relatively important, the sex is not
shown crûment, various forms of perversions and especially of sadism with
the regard of the women often constitute the erotic main resource, and
the films
pinku eiga are generally made with a tiny budget.
The photographic quality of the first
pinku eiga distinguishes them too
modern erotic films: it were turned in 35 mm and were planned for
to be projected on big screen.
History of the pinku eiga
Beginnings
The beginnings of the
pinku eiga correspond to a difficult phase of
history of the Japanese cinema. When in the middle of the Sixties hearths
start to be largely equipped with television sets (movement strongly
accelerated by the behavior of the
Olympic Games of summer of 1964 with Tokyo), the large production companies undergo a decline of audience worrying. They react in
producing films with the topics plus touts, the center of which the sex
(with the
pinku then the
Romance porn ) and violence (in particular
in the
Yakuza eiga ). In this economic context, the
pinku eiga
becomes inevitably a kind of commercial cinema with small budget.
The Olympic Games
1964 were also the occasion, for
government, of

prohibited, which contributed certainly to the rise of the
pinku , and
to push the kind towards the large studios and a stronger visibility.
Thus the first
pinku eiga which marked the history was
Kuroi yuki
(
Black Snow ) of Tetsuji Takechi because of its lawsuit for
“obscenity” in
1965, whereas the true ones
first
pinku , for
which the word was invented, went back to the years
1962 -
1963
but circulated in an independent distribution network, with the restricted public.
Since end of the year 60
Of anecdotiquement erotic (some scenes the naked ones, or sexual relations
more suggested than shown) in the neighborhoods of 1965, the
pinku became more corrosive
and close to the cinema of exploitation towards end of the year 60 and during
the Seventies, in particular through sound
prolongation in the productions of the
Nikkatsu called
Romance porn .
This popularity declined during the Eighties, when the market of the Vidéo
he imposed the competition of erotic films purely
or pornographic.
But the kind did not completely disappear, and one still produces some
pinku eiga nowadays.
After 1971, the “novel porn” of Nikkatsu
The term of
Romance porn (ロマンポルノ,
Romance for “romantic” and
porn in the direction of erotism
software ) is rather a lucky find marketing of the company
of production
Nikkatsu that a really innovative kind compared to
pinku eiga : it is under this name
that many erotic films produced by Nikkatsu to leave
from 1971 will be indicated. Films of the same kind produced by others
companies will be rather called
erodakushion , productions erotic.
As with the
pinku , the very moderate erotism of the
Romance porn will surprise
perhaps less the contemporary Western spectator that his leaning for
various forms of sadistic violence: the Japanese censure was strong, and the scenes
of love explicit (or the monstration of pilosities or sexual organs) were
rigorously impossible, any failure would severely be condemned.
Nikkatsu was continued besides in 1972 to have produced 4 judged films
obscenes.
The films of the kind Romance porn were mainly produced during
the Seventies (although the series of the Romance porn was not officially stopped
that in 1988). These films were carried out very quickly (generally less than 15 days,
Turning and Assembly included/understood), with small budgets, was short
(70 to approximately 80 minutes) and produced into large numbers (of order 6 or 7
films per month). But the Romance porn were turned by realizers
professionals and tested, in general in 35 mm, and they were not
always stripped of esthetic qualities if not artistic interest.
