Pilgrimage of Rome
The pilgrimage of Rome is, with those of the Holy Land (Jerusalem in particular) and of Compostelle, one of the three principal Pèlerinage S Christians.
The principal way of pilgrimage towards Rome, attested since 990 by the course of Sigéric, is the Via Francigena .
The pilgrimage of Rome is made AD limina Apostolorum , i.e. until the threshold of the tomb of the Apostles Pierre and Paul. It includes four basilicas major :
- the Basilica Saint-Pierre, with the the Vatican, tomb of holy Pierre,
- the basilica Saint-Paul-out-the-Walls, on the Ostienne way, tomb of holy Paul,
- the Midsummer's Day Basilica of Lateran, cathedral of Rome and the world,
- the Holy-Marie-Major basilica, with the relic of the Crib.
To these four major basilicas are added a multitude of minor basilicas, as well as the catacombs. The Roman pilgrimage also often includes the reception of the apostolic blessing, by the Pape (at the time of the weekly public sitting, of the angelus Sunday, or in other circumstances, such as great masses or private audiences).
The Turn of the seven churches , instituted by saint Philippe Néri, includes/understands the four major basilicas and three important minor basilicas:
- the Holy-Cross-in-Jerusalem basilica, which keeps the relics of Passion,
- the basilica Saint-Laurent-out-the-Walls, falls from saints Etienne and Laurent,
- the Saint-Sebastien basilica, on the Voie Appienne, above the catacombs.
