Pilcomayo

Río Pilcomayo called also sometimes Araguay is the name of a river located at the center of the South America which constitutes longest Affluent of the river Paraguay.

Description of the course

This river takes its source in the center of the Bolivia, in the south-east of the department of Oruro, and runs towards south-east to its confluence with the Paraguay, downstream from the town of Asunción to the Paraguay. After having left Bolivia, Río Pilcomayo delimits the border between the Argentine and Paraguay, throughout its lower course, where it crosses the Gran Chaco. The length of Pilcomayo borders the 2  500 km.

Characteristic

Water of Pilcomayo is contaminated by the ores which are exploited with Sucre and Potosi, in Bolivia.

The fluctuation of the meanders of Pilcomayo between Argentina and Paraguay poses problems of delimitation of the borders since one does not know any more with whom to allot the dead meanders. (Michel FOUCHER, Faces and borders)
