Pieter Lastman

Pieter Lastman or Pieter Pietersz Lastman (1583 - 1633) was a Dutch painter.

Between 1604 and approximately 1607, Lastman travelled in Italy, where it was influenced by Caravage (like were the painters of the school of Utrecht a few years later) and by Adam Elsheimer.

Lastman had like pupils Rembrandt and Jan Lievens. It seems that Rembrandt never visited itself Italy, but was influenced by the means of Lastman.

Pieter Lastman belongs to a group of artists whom one names the preones, i.e. painters before Rembrandt, of sensitivity close to the beginnings of the Master:
