Piet Retief (city)

Piet Retief is a rural Ville of South Africa located in the Province of the Mpumalanga at the south-east of the Transvaal, near to the Swaziland.

The city was founded by the Voortrekker S in 1883 and was baptized in the honor of Piet Retief, leader voortrekker assassinated on order of the King Zoulou Digane in February 1838.

In 1886, the 72 inhabitants of the city unilaterally déclarérent to constitute themselves in republic of the small free state.

In 1891, this small republic was integrated into the Republic of South Africa of Transvaal.

In 1932, the city became a Municipalité of province.

Since 2000, Piet Retief is integrated in the local municipality of Mkhondo within the district of Gert Sibande.

Populated nowadays of 40 thousand inhabitants, Piet Retief is especially a stage city between Swaziland and the KwaZulu-Native . The major tourist attraction of Piet Retief is the Dutch church of the city built in the fields of the architect Gerald Moerdijk in 1921.
