The berkelium is a chemical element Transuranien of symbol Bk and Atomic number 97.

History

It was synthesized for the first time in December 1949 by Stanley G. Thompson, Glenn T. Seaborg, Kenneth Street, Jr., and Albert Ghiorso with the University of Berkeley (California). The first Isotope product has a mass number of 243 and is degraded with a Demi-vie 4,5 hours. Ten other isotopes were synthesized since. Because of its scarcity, berkelium currently does not have any commercial use.
