Pierrepoint

The Pierrepoint are a family of Bourreau X Britannique S being summarized with three representatives:

Henry Pierrepoint (1874 - 1922)

British torturer of 1901 up to 1910. It hung 107 people. He was the father of Albert Pierrepoint and brother of Thomas Pierrepoint.

Thomas Pierrepoint (1870 - 1954)

Britannique torturer who carried out 201 people in England and with the Wales and more than 300 in total, includes there executions in Ireland, Germany, and Cyprus. He worked until his 76ème year (withdrawn in 1946).
He was the brother of Henry Pierrepoint and the uncle of Albert Pierrepoint.

Albert Pierrepoint (1905 - 1992)

Born the March 30th 1905 in Clayton, Bradford (Yorkshire of the West) and deceased July 10th 1992 with Southport (Merseyside). It was without the most famous question of the three. It will follow the traces of his Henry father while becoming assistance-executor under the orders of his uncle Thomas in 1932, which it will succeed in 1940. It was one of the last official executors to the the United Kingdom (the abolition of the capital punishment in this country was voted in 1973). He was regarded as the British executor more " prolifique" XXe century: he officiated in 450 hangings between 1932 and 1956, that is to say 433 men and 17 women, as well in the United Kingdom, as in Irish Republic, Germany or Egypt. Its most notable executions were:

  • 13 German war criminals. 3 women: Irma Grese, youngest guard of concentration camp (it was 22 years old), with being carried out for crimes committed in the camps of Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz, Elisabeth Volkenrath (idem), and Johanna Bormann (for committed crimes with Auschwitz only); like 10 men of which: Josef Kramer, the Commander of the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen. All were carried out with Hameln the December 13rd 1945 at half an hour of interval, the women having been hung individually, the men per pairs.

  • John Amery, wire of the Secretary of State for the India during the war, Leopold Amery, the only person to be condemned for treason. Carried out with the Prison of Wandsworth, London, the December 19th 1945. According to a description of Albert Pierrepoint " it is the good man whom I have pendu".
  • Lord Haw-Haw, of his true name " William Joyce" , radio presenter pro-German during the war, recognized guilty of treason and carried out to the prison of Wandsworth, January 3rd 1946.
  • John George Haigh, the fatal with the bath-tub of acid carried out to the prison of Wandsworth August 10th 1949.
  • Timothy Evans, hung with the prison of Pentonville the March 9th 1950 for the murder of his/her daughter, of which it will obtain forgiveness in 1966 on a purely posthumous basis (one also suspecté it of the murder of his wife). It was discovered consequently that this murder was the work of its neighbor John Christie who confessed being a serial killer nécrophile. This last was carried out by Pierrepoint the July 15th 1953 with Pentonville.
  • Derek Bentley, 19 years carried out with the prison of Wandsworth the January 28th 1953 for its participation supposed in the murder of a police officer.
  • Michael Manning hung the April 20th, 1954 was the last person carried out in Irish Republic.
  • Ruth Ellis, the last woman carried out in the United Kingdom, the July 13rd 1955 for the murder of his/her lover. Contrary to a myth, Pierrepoint did not regret any compared to this execution.
  • James Inglis, the fastest hanging of the history: 7 seconds. Carried out the May 8th 1951.

However Albert Pierrepoint resigned of his functions in 1956, following a dissension with the administration on the remuneration of his last hanging (that of Thomas Bancroft). Leaving the place to its successor Harry Allen.

Albert Pierrepoint is deceased in 1992, four years after his wife.
