Pierre de Vérone

Pierre de Vérone , known as also Pierre Martyr - (1205 - 1252) - Inquisiteur.

Biography

Pierre was born around 1205 with Vérone from a family cathare. Its legend tells that he recited the Credo whereas he was very child, in spite of the hostility of his family circle.

It left to study with Bologna and it is for this period that it entered to the Preaching friars whereas holy Dominique was still alive.

He preached especially years Italy of north against the cathares, and was prior with Asti and Plaisance. However its principal place of activity will remain Milan where it founded the Dominican Monastery of San Pietro in Campo Santo.

While fighting against the beliefs of the cathares, it was devoted to the Christian formation of laic, the diffusion of the worship of the Vierge, and to the creation of institutions aiming to the defense of catholic orthodoxy.

Its preachings, reinforced by solids knowledge of the Bible, were accompanied by a life of asceticism and of charity, miracles are also allotted to him.

With Florence, it tied deep friendships with the septs founders of the Ordre of Servites of Marie, of which he became the adviser. In 1251, the Pope Innocent IV appointed it inquisitor for Milan, and As of which he was elected prior of the convent.

It was one of most frightening inquisiteurs and sent to roughing-hew good number of cathares. Its action caused much hatred, which made say to Pierre who it expected to die of violent death. April 6th 1252, saturdays of Easter, it was attacked on the road of As with Milan by certain Pietro da Balsamo says Carino (which later had remord this act, entered in its turn at the Dominican ones, and died in odor of holiness), wounded with blow of bill hook and stabbed.

Canonization

Two years only after his death, the Pope Innocent IV canonized it for exalter in him the hero of the fight against the heresy cathare.

The Pope, in his bubble of canonization recognized “ devotion, humility, obedience, benevolence, piety, patience, charity to him” and presented it like a “ enthusiastic lover of the faith, his eminent expert and his even burning defender ”.

Its festival was fixed at the April 29th, however, he is celebrated more only in his Order and certain churches: the basilica Eustorge Saint with Milan where its skin rests, and the sanctuary of Seveso.
