Pierre de Norroy

The stone of Norroy is a stone white Calcaire with fine grain, extracted as of the Antiquité from the careers from Norroy-the-Bridge-with-Monsoon, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France.

History

At the first centuries of our era, the Romans extract the stone from Norroy and export it with far (Strasbourg, Mainz, Nimègue). The careers are then a kind of state enterprise for which the army provides in time peace framing and perhaps labor. To conclude these " campaigns of extraction" , the centurions detached with the careers of Norroy devoted furnace bridges dedicated to Jupiter and Hercules Saxanus , the Hercules of the carriers. Four furnace bridges, including three bearing a dedication with Hercules Saxanus , were discovered between 1721 and 1915 as well as a parietal inscription. These vestiges date from Ier century of our era.

Nowadays, these careers are not exploited any more.
