Pierre de Foix (1386 - † the December 13rd 1464), known as Old the , cardinal (1409), papal legate in Avignon (1433-1464) and archbishop of Arles (1450-1463).
Pierre de Foix ( Pétro de Fuxo ) is resulting from a feudal big family, the counts de Foix, known since the 11th century. He is wire of Archambaud, Captal de Buch , and of Isabelle, countess of Foix
In 1409, it is named cardinal at the time of the great schism, by Benoît XIII pope of Avignon, also called Pedro de Luna. It has a big role, during and after the Concile of Constancy near Benoît XIII, taken refuge with Peniscola, and near its in particular Aragonese partisans. It convened to examine the rights of the applicants to the papal throne, and contributed to the election of Martin V on November 11th 1417.
For memory let us recall that the Concile of Constancy puts an end to the Schisme Occident (1388-1414). This schism hardly touched the faithful people. It was about a “combat of chiefs”! However there was “schism” on the level of the dioceses and the bishops: one was obedience of Rome or that of Avignon, generally according to the choice of the political officials.
It remains more than 25 years to the évêché of Comminges (South-western of France) of 1422 with 1450?
Sent by the new pontiff in the capacity as Legate close to the King d' Aragon, he convenes in 1429 a Concile with Tortose, and, by obtaining the resignation of the antipape Clément VIII, finishes fortunately the schism.
In 1448, it intervenes as a Papal legate at the time of the invention of the relics of Marie Salome and Marie Jacobé with Our-Lady-of-the-Sea (Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer). Little time after with died of Louis Aleman, it is named, by Eugene IV, governor of the Comtat, Avignon and archbishop of Arles (1450 - 1463). For this reason it chairs in 1457 the council of Arles, then the following year the Concile of Avignon. It made there adopt wise regulations for the administration of the dioceses. On a purely anecdotic basis, it authorizes in 1459 the ancestor of Nostradamus Crescas of Carcassonne, Jewish convert, to bear the name of “ Pierre of Notre-Dame ” and in 1460, it grants a bubble of indulgences to support the construction of a church of the preachers in the town of Arles.
The cardinal dies in Avignon, on December 13rd 1464, 78 years old and is buried in a marble tomb in the church of Cordeliers, where it is represented knelt. He has time to constitute a rich person library whose majority of the works belonged to the anti-pope Pierre de Luna. Toulouse owes him the foundation of the Collège of Foix.
