Pierre and Gilles

Pierre and Gilles is the signature used by the couple of French artists formed by the photographer Pierre Commoy and the painter Gilles Blanchard .

Biography

Pierre Commoy was born in 1950 with the Roche-sur-Yon and Gilles Blanchard in 1953 with the Havre. They grow both in families which, without being austere, their dictate codes of conduct that they will hasten to transgress, come adolescence. Where the “good taste” is of setting, they impregnate cinema Korean, Chinese, Hollywood, and of all the images to the saturated colors. After artistic studies in Le Havre for Gilles, they settle with Paris the same year, in 1973. Pierre works for some magazines. They meet in 1976 and begin a common life, and their collaboration, in total rupture with a family tradition guided by the “good taste” and strongly influenced by the Pop Art.

1978 will mark a new turning in their artistic collaboration: they discover Bollywood and its myriads of colors chatoyantes.

They are known for their photographs improved with the painting which they carry out together since their meeting. These works approach topics of the culture pop, gay culture , including the Pornographie, or the Religion (a representation of Saint Sebastien). The religion is something of very important is very strong in their works, “ We have the taste of the mystic. It is very difficult to separate art and religion ”. Their works are often described as Kitsch. Pierre & Gilles define their work as follows: “ One likes to idealize but one also speaks about death, the mystery and the strangeness of the life. There is as much softness than of violence in our images… ”

They also carried out small pockets of discs (in particular the album The Adventures Of Ghosthorse & Stillborn of CocoRosie).
