Pierre Toubert , born with Algiers the November 29th 1932, is a Historien French, specialist in the Moyen-âge.

Former student of the National university (1952), it is aggregate of history (1958) and member of the French École of Rome (1958-1961). As from 1962, it is incorporated in the National center of the scientific research before entering two years later as assistant to the Sorbonne. In 1964, it is named director of studies in IVe section of the practical École of the high studies (École of the high studies in social sciences).

In 1972, it supports its thesis of doctorate entitled the Structures of medieval Latium. Southernmost Latium and the Sabine of IXe century at the end of XIIe century (2 vol., 1973), in which it describes the phenomenon of the Incastellamento (it is about the village regrouping exerted around a castle, in particular on the Mediterranean circumference).

Between 1973 and 1975, it is university lecturer in medieval history, then in 1976, professor of the universities to the Sorbonne. From 1992 to 2003, he was professor of history of the Mediterranean Occident to the Middle Ages with the Collège de France.

Since, its research relates in particular to the organization of the settlement and the companies in medieval Italy between the Early middle ages and the 14th century. He is member of the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities since 1986.
