Biography
Pierre Poujade was the junior by seven children and had to stop his studies with the Saint-Eugene College of Aurillac, following the death of his father, architect. After “touchhaving touched” of various trades like apprentice typographer, monitor of physical education, Docker or tar sprayer, it militated some time in the French Popular party (PF) of Jacques Doriot before becoming during the war, a transitory member of a Vichyist youth movement, the Compagnons of France; with the invasion of the “free zone” by the Germans at the end of 1942, it decided to join, via Spain, the Résistance. Engaged in aviation with Algiers, it met his future wife Yvette Seva whom it will marry in July 1944 and with which it will have five children. With the Release, he became representative in religious books then settled as bookseller-paper maker in his birthplace of Saint-Céré (from where his nickname of “paper maker of Saint-Céré”) of which he belonged to the Municipal council.
Pierre Poujade reaches brutally notoriety in 1953 when it takes the head of a group of tradesmen who oppose in a muscular way a fiscal control in this small town of the center of France. The controllers give up their mission and from the tradesmen of the close departments come to ask council to the “paper maker of Saint-Céré”, become meanwhile city council man. This tax revolt marks the beginning of the movement poujadist. Extremely in mouth, speaker of platform, Pierre Poujade excel speaks with all the professions which feel threatened by a world which changes. It is there to defend them. In the name of “small”, it denounces with vehemence “State vampire” and its “soupiers” (senior civil servants which “go to soup”), “eminences” and “stateless people” which occupies the “France house”. Its movement is violently unparliamentary. Supported at its beginnings by the communist mediums which hope to recover the movement, it will be then qualified nickname “Poujadolf” to discredit it, a reference on the one hand to its political meetings, joining together until: 200000 people (January 24th 1955 with Paris), but who returns especially on her readily xenophobe subjects or anti-semites; its attacks repeated against the politician of Jewish confession Pierre Mendès France, “which has of French only the word added to its name”, are unambiguous.
Its trade union movement, the Union of defense of the tradesmen and craftsmen (UDCA), was a great success in the depressed context and déliquescent IV {{E}} République, like in its electoral version, the Union and French fraternity (UFF). What enables him to send 52 deputies (2,4 million votes, is 11,6%) to the National Assembly in 1956 with an electoral law which granted 70 deputies to MRP with however close to: 230000 votes of less. Among them Jean-Marie Le Pen was, which was going to become thereafter the outstanding figure of the extreme right-hand side in France. The two men scrambled themselves quickly, Jean-Marie Le Pen is excluded from the UFF and Pierre Poujade refuses until the end any affinity.
However, the arrival of the V {{E}} République in 1958 quickly made lower the influence of Pierre Poujade.
He will be candidate twice with the European elections: in 1979 on the list of Philippe Malaud, then in 1984 on the socio-professional list presented by Gerard Nicoud, but without being elected. It will chair the UDCA until in 1983, date on which it was withdrawn from the political life to study and promote the culture of the Topinambour S, in the intention to extract some from the biocarburants, in order to bring energy independence to France and to bring direct and renewable resources to agriculture and everyone rural.
It was named by François Mitterrand member of the Economic and Social Council of 1984 with 1999, of the National advisory commission for the fuels of substitution since 1984 and vice-president of the Confederation of the producing trade unions of plants alcooligenes (CAIPER). He was also operations manager in Romania after the revolution of 1989. He also animated an association aiming to the promotion of the Romania, through rounds in France of Rumanian high-school pupils presenting of the folk spectacles.
Generally although classified with the right-hand side even with the extreme right-hand side of the political chessboard, it supported with each presidential election the victorious candidate (Charles de Gaulle, Georges Pompidou, Valery Giscard d'Estaing, François Mitterrand by twice and Jacques Chirac), except for that of 2002 where it chooses Jean-Pierre Chevènement. It is claimed that the discipline of vote of the poujadists allowed several times to make the difference.

In an interview on RTL, in May 1978, when Pierre Poujade takes the head of a list to the European elections: “We will have elections with the the European Parliament. The responsibilities for the European Parliament are extremely important for the France in general, and for the middle-classes in particular. It should not be waited until the traditional parties defend our interests. We do not have anything to wait them. This is why I announced the color: I take the head of a list of defense of the middle-classes. I am there, I am not old. I aged certainly, but this ageing gave me a certain experiment. ”

Only reaction of the political world with died of Pierre Poujade, that of the president of the National front, Jean-Marie Le Pen in an official statement: “With him a figure disappears which was emblematic fight of the middle-classes against the bureaucracy and the fiscalism and, more generally, against the French decline which incarnated IVe République finishing”. Questioned on RTL, the leader of the FN nevertheless took its distances with the founder of the UDCA: “The poujadism and the lepenism do not have anything to see. I am a political leader. Pierre Poujade was a trade union leader. He carried out an operation commando on the policy which was offered to him to some extent by opportunity. In its for interior, he was not a politician. ”
Today, when somebody of poujadist is treated, it is to compare it to somebody of contained on his personal interests. The direction of this term became near to that of “populist”.
