Pierre Philippe Denfert-Rochereau
Pierre Marie Philippe Aristide Denfert-Rochereau (born with Saint-Maixent-the School, the January 11th 1823 and died with Versailles, the May 11th 1878) is a French soldier. There remained famous to have directed the resistance of the Fortified town of Belfort during the Franco-German Guerre of 1870, which was worth to him the nickname of Lion of Belfort .
Biography
Born in a Protestant family from middle class, married to Pauline Surleau-Goguel (old woman family of Montbeliard), it is graduate of Polytechnique.
Military career
It is distinguished during forwarding of Rome of 1849 and then takes part in the Crimean War in 1855, then is in station in Algérie of 1860 with 1864.
Sit of Belfort
Named governor of the place of Belfort in 1870, he is confronted as of November 1870 with the attack then with the seat of the German armies , carried out by Werder. He carries out then with his garrison and the population of the city a heroic resistance which lasts 103 days. It is only the February 18th 1871, on an order of the government of National defense, chaired by Louis Adolphe Thiers, which it agrees to lower the weapons and to go. Partisan of the war against the Germany and of the refusal of the armistice, it requests in front of Thiers the grace of the young officer Louis-Nathaniel Rossel - he also Protesting - which had joined the Commune of Paris after the French defeat. This last was however carried out the November 27th 1871.The resistance of Pierre Philippe Denfert-Rochereau saves the honor of a France humiliated by the defeat of Mac-Mahon to Sedan and the rendering of Bazaine to Metz. It makes it also possible to Thiers to negotiate the conservation of the district of Belfort within the France, whereas it formed before part of the Alsace, from now on asserted by the German .
Political career
In 1872, it is appointed with the Synod of the Churches reformed for the liberal current . He is opposed to François Guizot and Charles Bois, of the orthodoxe current against the adoption of a Confession of faith.
National hero, it is elected appointed with the National Assembly, where it supports the policy of Leon Gambetta. He dies in Versailles in 1878. Its skin rests at the sides of his wife, in the cemetery of Montbeliard.
A Parisian place, where is bronze a counterpart of the Lion of Belfort and a subway station bear its name.
