Pierre Louis Dulong
Pierre Louis Dulong , born with Rouen the February 12th 1785 and died in Paris the July 19th 1838, is a Chimiste and Physicien French, author of work on the specific Chaleur, the Dilatation and the Index of refraction of gases.
Biography
It makes its secondary studies at the central schools of Auxerre and Rouen, then enters in 1801 to the Polytechnic school. He exerts initially the medical profession, then turns to sciences and becomes preparer of chemistry at the Polytechnic school near Louis Jacques Thénard. He is inspector in there 1813, then professor of physics of 1820 with 1829, succeeding Alexis Therese Petit, and finally director of studies of 1830 to his death.
He is elected member of the Academy of Science in 1823.
He is also substitute for Thénard for the courses of the 2nd six-month period to the Faculty of Science of Paris, of 1820 with 1832.
In 1828, it exchanges its course of chemistry with the course of physics of Louis Joseph Gay-Lussac.
In 1832, he becomes chemistry teacher with Faculty.
Work
Pierre Louis Dulong discovered in 1812 the chloride nitrogen, but by making experiments on this dangerous compound, it lost, in consequence of an explosion, an eye and two fingers. In physics, he recognized, with Alexis Therese Petit, that the specific heat of the bodies is because reverse of the weight of their atoms. They developed a theory making it possible to explain the value of the Specific heat of the metals known under the name of Loi of Dulong and Petit.
Lastly, it determined, with François Arago, the elastic force of the steam at various temperatures.
The majority of its writings were published in the Annales of chemistry and physics . One owes him in particular in chemistry:
- On the mutual decomposition of salts (1811)
- On the nitrous acid (1815)
- On the combinations of phosphorus with oxygen (1816)
- To the measure of the temperatures
- On the elastic fluids (1820)
Homages
Its name is registered on the Eiffel Tower.
